Colombia's immigration authority lists an exit travel ticket among the documents a foreign visitor may have to present, together with proof of financial means, "as applicable". The Migración Colombia entry and exit requirements place it next to a valid passport and, where your nationality or activity calls for one, a visa.
The page does not describe the ticket as a blanket rule for every traveler. An immigration officer can still ask for it, and so can your airline before it lets you board. Our Colombia onward ticket page explains the temporary reservation option.
What the official page lists
| Document | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid and current |
| Visa | Required if your nationality or planned activity calls for one |
| Exit ticket | An exit travel ticket, as applicable |
| Financial means | Proof of solvency, as applicable |
The same page says that paid activity requires a visa whatever your nationality, with limited exceptions.
Return ticket or onward ticket?
A return ticket takes you back to the country you came from. An onward ticket takes you from Colombia to another country you can enter. The official wording is an exit ticket, so what matters is that the document shows you leaving Colombia. A domestic flight between two Colombian airports does not. For the difference between the two documents, read onward ticket vs return ticket.
How long can you stay?
The page does not give a number of days. It says visitors must remain within the time granted at entry, under their entry and stay permit (PIP) or their visa. Choose an exit date that fits the stay you expect, and after arrival rely on the permission you were actually given.
Check-Mig before you travel
The same page presents the Check-Mig pre-registration form as recommended, to be completed up to 72 hours before travel. Ask your airline whether it expects the form at check-in.
Is a temporary reservation sufficient?
A temporary flight reservation shows a planned route and a booking reference while it is active, but it is not a paid ticket. Do not assume that an unissued reservation satisfies an officer or an airline in every case. If your airline accepts a reservation for your route, confirm that it is still active when you present it.
A ticket with change or refund conditions that suit your plans can be an option when your route is still open. Compare the actual terms before you buy. You can review reservation options, but do not describe a temporary booking as a confirmed ticket.
Before you fly
- Check on an official source whether your nationality or activity requires a visa.
- Decide how and when you will leave Colombia.
- Choose an exit date that fits the stay you expect to be granted.
- Ask the operating airline which document it accepts at check-in for a one-way arrival.
- Keep the ticket and your proof of funds available offline.

Frequently asked questions
Is an exit ticket mandatory for every visitor to Colombia?
The official page lists it "as applicable", so it is not presented as a blanket rule. An officer or your airline can still ask for it, so be ready to show one.
Is it checked by the airline or by immigration?
Both can check it. Airlines review entry documents before boarding, and the immigration officer decides on entry when you arrive.
Does the exit ticket have to be a flight?
The page says exit travel ticket and does not name a means of transport. Ask your airline what it accepts at check-in.
Do I need to show money?
Proof of financial means is on the same list, "as applicable". The page does not state an amount.
How many days can I stay?
The page gives no figure. It says to stay within the time granted at entry under your permit or visa.
Create a temporary flight reservation for visa files, airline checks, or proof of onward travel.
